Symposium on the mechanics of physicochemical and electromechanical interactions in porous media

18-23 may 2003,
Rolduc, Kerkrade,
The Netherlands.

Scope of the symposium

The last decades, new experimental and numerical techniques have taken many advanced features of porous media mechanics down to practical engineering applications. This happened in areas that sometimes were not even suspected to be open to engineering ideas at all. The challenge that often faces engineers in the field of geomechanics, biomechanics, rheology and material science, is the translation of ideas existing in one field to solutions in the other. The purpose of this symposium is to dive deep into the mechanics of those porous media that involve both mechanics and chemistry, mechanics and electromagnetism, mechanics and thermal fluctuations or mechanics and biology. On purpose the different sessions will not be formed according to field interest (biomechanics, geomechanics, hydrology or polymer science), but they will be formed on the basis of the physics involved.

Topics

The following topics are intended to be emphasised:
  • Adsorption, absorption, osmosis and hydration in porous media
  • Numerical and experimental techniques in coupled flow phenomena
  • Experimental techniques on the microscale
  • Micro-macro transformation in mixtures
  • Ionised porous media: clays, shales, hydrogels, cartilage and cells
  • Optical techniques and nanotechnology as a tool to porous media mechanics
  • EM-wave propagation in fluid-solid mixtures.

Participation

Participation is restricted to invited scientists. The number of participants will be strictly limited and preference will be given to active researchers in the field. The selection of participants will be done by the Scientific Committee. Anyone wishing to participate should therefore contact the chairman of this committee or one of its members. Limited funds are available to support those participants who cannot obtain the funds to travel and visit the symposium.

Accompanying persons

Informal guided tours for accompanying persons will be arranged in the monastery of Rolduc and tourist attractions and museums in Maastricht and Aachen. Entrance fees and public transportation costs have to be paid individually.
